Favorite Dragon(s)
If someone were to ask me "What kind of dragon do you like best?", I'd have to say that's a loaded and vague question. There are many kinds of dragons throughout mythology, literature, and cinema. Then there's the fact that there are dragons that wield different elements, too. Yup, you heard right. While dragons are famous for breathing fire and that's the element we most associate them with, different dragons from different regional mythologies can wield different elements. In addition to your classic fire-breathers, I've heard of dragons that can wield ice (and/or water), earth, and even electricity. Remember the aggressive Skrill from the How To Train Your Dragon franchise? Instead of breathing fire, it channels lightning down its metallic spines and can fire it from its mouth in a shower of destructive blasts. Not to mention, many dragons in different Asian cultural mythology are associated with water and bringing rain (though some of these also additionally breathe fire as well).
Let's not forget that different parts of the world have different kinds of stories and perceptions of dragons. In western cultures, like Europe, dragons are often seen as malevolent monsters, and these kinds of cultures have many stories about knights slaying dragons in order to save a damsel in distress or their homeland. However, eastern cultures (like Asia, for instance) typically view dragons as benevolent creatures that bring good fortune (and rain, for that matter).
That said, I have quite a number of "favorite dragons," though I typically favor dragons depicted in the media. You know, the ones in books, movies, or even video games. Yes, one of my top favorite dragons is from a video game, and for those close to me, I think you know which dragon I'm talking about ('cough', Spyro, 'cough'). Anyway, my two favorite dragons--narrowed down at least--would have to be Spyro, the purple dragon from video games, and Toothless, the Night Fury dragon from one of my favorite DreamWorks movie franchises, How To Train Your Dragon. That said, do any of YOU have a favorite dragon across media or popular mythology? Let me know in the comments.
